One of PPI’s many projects with longtime partner Viacom was the MTV Networks multi-floor lobby, completed in early 2012. This system is comprised of 49 different displays between 7” and 32” arranged in various locations around the two floors. The displays are integrated into the millwork of the lobbies to create an artful, bright, and sophisticated look. Video is divided into four zones for content management, and sent to a video mixer to make traditional TV content more abstract. Additionally, PPI worked with Traxon, an industry leader in lighting solutions, to design a custom oversize LED light in the shapes of the letter M. This light, integrated with the staggered displays, creates a unique and stylish look for the entire space. PPI also installed a multi-zoned audio system with in-wall speakers, and the entire lobby system is controlled by a touch panel at the rack. PPI worked with a+i architecture for this project, which exemplifies design creativity as well as sleek and non-traditional in-field audiovisual work. Opened in 2012, the Time Warner Media Center is a state-of-the-art facility that allows Time Warner and its partners to understand consumer behavior across the content spectrum, from media all the way through retail. The Beatrice, an established luxury residential building in New York City, hired Presentation Products to design and install an audio system for its rooftop lounge and common areas in 2010. Flex Mussels

Flex Mussels Restaurant and Flex2, located uptown on 82nd Street and downtown on 13th Street, are two of Manhattan’s finest seafood restaurants. Flex2, on 13th Street and 6th Ave, was a new-build project that required collaboration with a large design team – including architects, interior designers, and lighting consultants. The simple, clean design features a Bose ControlSpace Engineered Sound System with satellite speakers and recessed in-ceiling bass modules which provide consistent levels of audio throughout the space. Volume, Zone, and Source Selection Panels were located behind the bar, and in the server, and hostess areas for convenience. The sources provided for the system were Sonos Internet Radio, a CD changer, Radio tuner, and an iPod dock which can all be played in various sub-zones throughout the space. Acoustical panels were installed on the underside of the soffits and in discreet locations to cut down voice reverberation levels and soften the dining experience. The Eventi, a Kimpton Property, is a luxury boutique hotel located in the heart of Manhattan. THE DIGITAL CONQUEST: Why Analog AV Systems are Doomed

These days nearly all new audiovisual devices are natively digital. Flat screen TV’s, projectors, blu-ray players, laptops, and desktop computers all operate on digital signals, yet these devices are often still connected to old analog audiovisual systems. In most cases, the use of analog AV equipment inhibits the functionality and performance of these digital devices. Recent developments in the performance and affordability of digital AV solutions have made the benefits of the digital world accessible to all. Digital systems enhance user experiences with high definition images, greater depth of color, lossless signal transmission, and plug-and-play capabilities. In the rapidly expanding digital world, it is becoming increasingly difficult – and expensive – to keep analog systems functioning and relevant.

Since most legacy audiovisual devices and appliances are analog-only, updating an existing analog system with a new HD display, media player, or laptop is no longer a matter of hooking up a few cables. Plugging a digital device into an analog AV system necessitates multiple conversions of the signal between analog and digital, which degrades quality and reliability. With the falling cost of components that can handle both digital and analog signals, as well as the adoption of high-definition digital inputs and displays as the new standard, it makes more and more sense to upgrade your AV infrastructure to digital. This not only provides users with the experience they expect, but it prepares you for the phase-out of analog signals for HD content known as the Analog Sunset. The Analog Sunset is a phrase used to describe the limitation of analog signals to carry high definition content on certain devices. BluRay players and protected content on laptops, PC, and cable boxes already have this limitation. In fact, as of 2013, some content will not be capable of playing through analog outputs at all. Hardware manufacturers are phasing out analog connections on new devices. The main connection on most new laptops is digital; new PCs almost always have digital outputs. Without an AV system that supports these signals, connection of these devices to your presentation system will not be possible. In summary, digital systems are now the norm – your systems must be able to support digital content or they will not function for all types of signals and devices.
